면적 2.33㎢, 인구 3만 4262명(2001)이다. 서울특별시 강남구에 속한 동이다. 강남구 북동쪽 영동대교 남단의 한강변에 있으며, 서쪽으로는 압구정동·논현동, 남쪽은 삼성동과 접해 있고, 북쪽은 한강을 경계로 성동구 성수동·자양동과 마주 보고 있다. 지금의 105번지 일대에 맑은 못이 있었으며, 134번지 주변 한강변의 물이 맑아 이 마을을 청숫골이라고 한 데에서 동 이름이 유래하였다.

조선시대 말까지 경기도 광주군 언주면 청담동이었는데, 1914년 경기도 구역 획정 때 청담리로 되었다. 1963년 서울특별시 성동구 언주출장소 관할로 있다가 1973년 영동출장소 관할이 되었으며, 1975년 강남구를 신설함에 따라 이에 속하여 오늘에 이르고 있다.

법정동인 이 동은 행정동인 청담1·2동으로 이루어져 있다.
 
자연마을로 청숫골, 숫골, 큰 말, 작은 말, 솔모퉁이 등이 있었고, 1973년 영동대교가 놓이기 전에는 전형적인 강촌으로, 주민들은 농업을 하는 한편 한강에 조각배를 띄워 게, 쏘가리, 붕어 등을 잡아 청담도선장을 통하여 강북으로 수송하였다. 과실로는 앵두가 유명하였다.

올림픽대로, 압구정로, 삼성로, 선릉로, 도산대로, 영동대로가 지나고 있어 교통이 편리하다. 청담공원이 아파트촌 중심부에 있다. 올림픽대로변에는 청담도로공원이 조성되어 있으며, 한강종합개발사업의 준공을 기념하는 준공탑이 세워져 있고, 전망휴게소로 팔각정이 있다.

이 지역은 1970년대 후반부터 건축 붐이 일기 시작하였고, 경기고등학교가 이전해 오고 영동고등학교가 신설되는 등 고교 배정 학군이 좋아지자, 인구가 급증하기 시작하였다.
