면적 1.90㎢, 인구 2만 3368명(2001)이다. 서울특별시 강남구에 속한 동이다. 강남구 북쪽 한강변에 있으며 동쪽의 청담동, 북쪽의 압구정동, 서쪽의 잠원동, 남쪽의 논현동·반포동과 이웃하고 있다.

이 지역에 있던 한강 새말［新村］과 사평리(沙坪里)의 앞 글자를 따서 동 이름이 되었다. 새말은 한남대교 남쪽에 새로 형성된 마을이라고 하여 붙여진 이름이고, 사평, 즉 모래벌은 한강변에 모래가 펼쳐져 있어서 붙여졌다.

조선시대 말까지 경기도 광주군 언주면 신촌, 사평리였으며 일제강점기인 1914년 경기도 구역 획정 때 새말, 사평리를 합하여 신사리로 되었다. 1963년 서울특별시 성동구로 편입되면서 신사동으로 바뀌었고, 1975년 강남구 신설로 이에 속하였다.

법정동인 이 동의 행정은 신사동사무소와 압구정1·2동사무소에서 일부 담당하고 있다.

조선시대에는 지금의 한남대교 자리에 새말나루터가 있어 강 건너 한남동의 한강나루와 이어졌고, 길목에 사평원(沙坪院)이 있어 교통의 중심지였으므로 조선 후기에는 상업 교역이 성행하였다. 당시 특산물로는 앵두, 생지황 등이 있었는데, 앵두는 이곳이 최적합지였으며, 해밀어(蟹密魚) 산지로도 유명하였다.

이 지역은 강남의 관문으로, 1968년부터 토지구획정리사업이 진행되어 한남대교가 개통되면서 발전하기 시작하였다. 동호대교와 이어진 논현로, 한남대교와 이어진 강남대로 등 많은 도로들이 지나고, 경부고속도로와도 연결되는 교통의 요지이다.

유흥업소와 상가건물이 밀집해 있으며, 한강변 올림픽대로 북쪽의 고수부지에는 다목적 운동장, 교통교육장 등의 시설이 있다.
